June Blooms: Community Garden News

May Recap

May was an incredibly busy month - probably the busiest month of the year - and we had something happening almost every Saturday. Two weekends of communal planting, one Saturday devoted to maintaining the shared space, two committee meetings, and a plant swap! We’ve finished laying cardboard and mulch over our pathways, built picnic tables, set up a pop-up nursery, and most of our gardens are in. Whew!

June promises a more relaxed schedule (and hopefully, more stable weather).

Announcements

  • Waitlist
All plots are reserved for the 2024 growing season. There is a waitlist for members of our community who would like to join the Mid Shooks Run Community Garden when openings occur. Existing members who would like to scale up the number of beds they have can also join the waitlist.
The waitlist is prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis. That is, the first gardener signing up for the waitlist will be at the top of the list and offered the first available plot in the garden. The higher your position on the waitlist, the sooner you will be offered a plot in the garden. However, even the very first gardener on the waitlist is not guaranteed to get a plot this year.
If you or someone you know would like to join the waitlist, here’s the link: https://www.midshooksruncommunitygarden.org/plot-reservation

  • Pop-Up Nursery June Hours
Pending fair weather, the pop-up nursery will be open every day from 8am - dusk.
During inclement weather, nursery stock will be moved to the greenhouse (e.g., temperatures drop below 50 fahrenheit, hail, strong winds, torrential downpour, etc.).
The pop-up nursery will stick around until we run out of inventory.

  • New Equipment
Two new picnic tables are at the garden. These will be great for taking a break during a gardening session, relaxing and savoring your hard work, and a meeting location for our monthly potlucks (pending favorable weather).
CAUTION: This year, they’ll receive several thin coats of tung oil to extend their lifespan, so they may be tacky sometimes as the tung oil cures. Tung oil is easy to clean off your skin and will wash off with simple soap and water.

  • Fairer Weather in June
May is a particularly unpredictable month. Sunny and 80 Fahrenheit one day, snow the next.
June promises more stable weather with overnight temperatures above 50 degrees fahrenheit.
The beginning of June is a great time to finish transplanting your tomatoes, peppers, and annual herbs. In addition, now is a great time direct sow winter and summer squash, corn, and beans.

  • Garden Expansion Planned for Fall
At the end of the 2024 growing season, we’ll break ground to the north of our fence line and increase our footprint by ~ 1100 square feet.
As we create a new garden layout, we’d love your input on how to best utilize the space. Have an idea? Contact us!

Happy Gardening!
